You can select your roommate(s), or you can apply on your own and we can match you with other students. Applicants answer a short list of lifestyle questions to help in the matching process.

Instead of requiring all roommates to sign a joint lease, each person at Ion has their own individual contract, with one person per bedroom. This means you are only responsible for paying for yourself — not your roommates. Even if a roommate moves out or other bedrooms in your apartment are empty, you only pay the rate for your bedroom. The spacious accommodations at Ion range from studio and 1-bedroom apartments to 4-bedroom apartments, with a private bathroom for each bedroom. There are even available two-story loft floorplans.

Residents can select an optional furniture package that includes a full-size bed, dresser, desk and chair in each bedroom, and a sofa, coffee table and entertainment stand in each living room. The standard term is August 13, 2024 to July 22, 2025, with payments made in 12 equal installments.

Within 7 days after a Housing Agreement is signed, each resident is required to do one of two things: provide a qualifying guarantor (often a parent), or pre-pay the final installment.

Yes. Residents can pay online 24 hours per day, by credit card or ACH electronic checking. Ion also offers automatic payment by either credit card or checking account — just fill out one page, one time and payments will be made automatically. Convenience fees apply for credit card and debit card payments.

Your living costs at Ion can be covered by financial aid, just like on-campus housing. Any available financial aid funds, after university charges are satisfied, are released to the student for non-institutional expenses, such as off-campus housing. These funds can be used to pay charges at Ion. Normal payment deadlines will continue to apply.

Nearly all the residents at Ion at the Ballpark are students at University of Alabama Birmingham and the per-person contracts are also designed with students in mind. Residents/families with children are welcome. There is no extra cost for minor children in the care of adult residents, other than regular charges for each bedroom space selected by the resident. A minor occupying a bedroom space rented by a parent, guardian or person with legal custody is not considered a breach of the Housing Agreement or a violation of the rules. Ion is an Equal Opportunity housing provider and welcomes applications from non-students. In order to match student roommates in shared apartments, we will request roommate consent for any non-student occupants.

Ion has a monitored fire sprinkler system, plus individually locking bedroom doors. Community courtesy patrols are provided at select times. Management staff are also on-site 24×7 and can be reached by a 24-hour phone number.

Ion is pet-friendly, subject to limits on animals and breeds. The community is smoke-free in all indoor and adjacent areas. Guests are welcome at all times, subject to the consent of roommates and security considerations. Overnight guests are welcome, with limits on the number of days and guests.

Ion offers optional parking in a gated underground parking garage at an additional cost. Street parking just outside Ion is available for guests.

Ion is a short four-block walk to UAB, University Hospital and Children’s Hospital, one block from Railroad Park, and three blocks from MAX Transit bus stops.
